At Greenhill Primary School, we want every child to have the opportunity to achieve well, participate fully in school life and thrive.

Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the government to schools to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. The funding is intended to help schools identify and remove barriers that may affect children's learning, progress, attendance, wellbeing or participation in school life.

How we use Pupil Premium at Greenhill

We use our knowledge of individual children to identify the barriers that may affect their learning and decide how best to use Pupil Premium funding to address them.

This may include:

• high-quality teaching and additional teaching support;
• targeted academic support and intervention;
• support with attendance, wellbeing or pastoral needs;
• resources which help children access learning;
• support to participate in wider opportunities and experiences; and
• staff training and approaches which strengthen provision for disadvantaged pupils across school.

Our focus is on making a meaningful difference. We monitor the progress, attainment, attendance and wider participation of disadvantaged pupils and review the impact of the support we provide.

Who is eligible for Pupil Premium?

Schools receive Pupil Premium funding for eligible groups of children. This includes children who are currently eligible, or have been eligible during the previous six years, for Targeted Free School Meals. Funding is also provided for looked-after and previously looked-after children, with separate arrangements for children from service families.

Because eligibility can bring additional funding into school, it is important that families register for Free School Meals even if their child does not intend to have a school meal every day.

Free School Meals – important changes from September 2026

From September 2026, the government has expanded eligibility for Free School Meals.

All children from households receiving Universal Credit are now entitled to a free school meal, regardless of household earnings.

There are now two categories of eligibility:

Targeted Free School Meals – for families meeting the government's existing qualifying criteria. For families receiving Universal Credit, this includes households with annual earned income of £7,400 or less. Children in this group can receive free school meals and may also attract Pupil Premium and other disadvantage funding for their school.

Expanded Free School Meals – for other households receiving Universal Credit that do not meet the Targeted Free School Meals criteria. Children in this group are entitled to free school meals, but this eligibility alone does not currently generate Pupil Premium funding.

Please apply – even if your child already receives a free meal

We strongly encourage all families who think they may be eligible to apply.

This is particularly important if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2. All children in these year groups already receive a free school meal through Universal Infant Free School Meals, but registering your eligibility separately can identify whether your child also qualifies under the Targeted Free School Meals criteria and may therefore generate additional funding for school.

The same applies if your child prefers packed lunches or does not regularly eat a school meal. Please still register if you think you may qualify.

Applying helps to make sure that your family receives the support to which you are entitled and that Greenhill receives all of the funding available to support our children.

If you are unsure whether you are eligible, please contact the school office. We would much rather families check than miss out on support that may be available to them.
