Personal, Social & Health Education

Our Curriculum

At Greenhill Primary School, we deliver our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education through the nationally recognised Jigsaw programme. Jigsaw is a comprehensive, spiral curriculum that supports children's personal development from Nursery through to Year 6. It is carefully structured so that knowledge, skills and understanding are revisited and built upon each year, enabling children to develop confidence, resilience and the ability to make informed, responsible choices.

The curriculum is organised into six half-termly themes:

  • Being Me in My World – understanding rights, responsibilities, belonging and how to contribute positively to school and wider communities.
  • Celebrating Difference – promoting respect, inclusion, equality, diversity and anti-bullying.
  • Dreams and Goals – encouraging ambition, perseverance, resilience and celebrating achievement.
  • Healthy Me – developing healthy lifestyles, physical and mental wellbeing, personal safety and making positive choices.
  • Relationships – building positive friendships, family relationships, communication skills, respect and conflict resolution.
  • Changing Me – supporting children to understand growing up, puberty, relationships and age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).

Every Jigsaw lesson follows a consistent structure, helping children feel safe and confident to participate. Lessons include opportunities for discussion, reflection, collaborative learning and the development of emotional literacy, enabling children to understand not only what they are learning, but why it matters in their everyday lives.

Our PSHE curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to become kind, respectful and responsible citizens. It helps them develop self-awareness, emotional resilience, empathy, confidence and the ability to keep themselves physically and emotionally safe. These skills support children's learning across the curriculum and prepare them for life beyond primary school.

As part of the Jigsaw programme, pupils receive Relationships Education, which is statutory for all primary-aged children, alongside age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from the non-statutory Sex Education elements of the curriculum (those not included within the National Curriculum for Science). Requests to withdraw should be made in writing by emailing wellbeing@gre.fa1.uk.

We value our partnership with parents and carers and encourage anyone with questions about our PSHE or RSE curriculum to contact the school. We are always happy to discuss the curriculum, share resources and explain how learning is adapted to meet the needs of each age group.

Additional Curriculum Opportunities

Alongside our Jigsaw PSHE curriculum, we enhance pupils' personal development through a range of complementary programmes. We use My Happy Mind, an award-winning programme that supports children's mental health and wellbeing by helping them understand how their brains work, develop resilience, build positive relationships and adopt healthy habits for life. Through weekly sessions, children learn practical strategies to manage their emotions, develop confidence, show gratitude and approach challenges with a positive mindset.

Keeping children safe online is also a key priority. As part of our Computing curriculum, pupils receive regular online safety education throughout the year. Weekly online safety learning helps children develop the knowledge and skills to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully. They learn how to protect their personal information, recognise and respond to potential risks, communicate positively online and know where to seek help if something makes them feel worried or unsafe. This ensures online safety is not taught as a one-off lesson but is embedded throughout children's learning and adapted to reflect the ever-changing digital world.

As part of this curriculum, Relationships Education is statutory for all primary-aged pupils. The Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) elements that go beyond the statutory National Curriculum for Science may be withdrawn from by parents.

If you wish to withdraw your child from these non-statutory RSE lessons, please submit your request in writing by emailing wellbeing@gre.fa1.uk. We encourage parents and carers to discuss any questions or concerns with the school so that we can work together to support every child's learning and wellbeing.

Recording Children's Learning

In PSHE, some of the most important learning takes place through discussion, reflection and shared experiences rather than lengthy written work. To capture this learning, we use Floor Books as a collaborative record of each class's PSHE journey.

Floor Books showcase the high-quality discussions that take place during lessons, recording children's ideas, questions, reflections and responses alongside photographs, drawings and examples of group activities. They enable every child's voice to be heard and celebrated, while providing a meaningful record of learning and progression across the year. By using Floor Books, we can demonstrate the depth of children's thinking and the development of their knowledge, understanding and personal skills throughout the PSHE curriculum.

Working in Partnership With Parents

At Greenhill Primary School, we believe that parents and carers play a vital role in supporting their child's personal development. We are committed to working in partnership with families to ensure that children receive consistent messages about wellbeing, relationships, respect and keeping themselves safe.

Throughout the year, we provide a range of opportunities for parents and carers to engage with our PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum. These include our popular Learn Alongside sessions, where families are invited into school to experience lessons with their children, dedicated parent information meetings explaining the RSHE curriculum and opportunities to ask questions, and regular curriculum updates shared through newsletters, emails and our website. We also actively seek feedback through parent questionnaires, using this to shape future events and ensure our curriculum continues to meet the needs of our school community.

We value the strong relationships we have with our families and encourage parents and carers to contact the school at any time if they have any questions about our PSHE or RSHE curriculum. By working together, we can help every child develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to lead happy, healthy and successful lives.
