Year 4 Autumn 1

Welcome to Year 4! I hope that you have all had a good Summer break.

Useful information
Homework will be given out during the first week of each half term. Each Friday, the children will hand in their books to show the work they have done at home, or a note from parents to explain what they are working on. All the compulsory homework is expected in by the last day of the half term.
Spellings are given out on a Monday for a spelling test the following Monday.
Year 4 PE is on a Monday and Tuesday.

Espresso: Espresso is a fantastic online resource to help children with their learning across the curriculum. There are videos, games and activities for all subject areas. The children will be bringing home a username and password to access this site at home.

In English we will begin the half term by studying persuasion and using ‘AFOREST’ to help us to remember different persuasive techniques. We will be writing our own persuasive pieces of writing based on London. We will then begin a book study of ‘Fizzlebert Stump: The boy who ran away from the circus and joined the library’ by A.F. Harrold and work towards creating our own new character for a ‘missing chapter’.

In Maths we are focussing on improving our knowledge of number and place value, particularly of 4 digit numbers. We are learning to count back through zero and solve problems involving negative numbers, count forwards and backwards in a range of multiples (6, 7, 9, 25, 1000). We will then move on to written methods for addition and subtraction.
As children are expected to know all of their times tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4, we will regularly practise these. Any practise children can do at home would be of great help.

Our topic this term is Geography based.  We will be improving our map skills by locating different countries and cities and learning about longitude and latitude. We will look closely at life in India and compare this to life in the UK. Then we will focus in on Eastern Europe.
